Dexter cattle are a heritage breed originating in Ireland in the early 1800s becoming popular with smallholders who appreciated their efficiency on limited acreage in producing milk and beef as well as use as oxen. They are the smallest breed of European cattle standing only 40" tall! Due to their small size, and docile temperament and hardiness Dexter cattle are ideally suited to eventually serving as therapeutic animals for our participants. That said, currently the most important service our cattle provide is soil fertility management!
Our philosophy is to raise our animals in a way that lets them be the animals they are, this means that our cattle only eat grasses and legumes from pasture in the spring, summer and fall, and hay (dried grass) in the wet winter season. These are
truly grass-fed cattle!
