    Three-day silk painting workshop on June 26th, July 3rd and 10th, 2016, 10am - 5pm

Yuzen dyeing – Japanese silk painting - is an art of hand-dyeing kimono fabrics conceived more than 300 years ago. This method applies natural materials such as rice glue resist and spiderwort flower extract for drawing contours on fabric. High quality acid-dye fluids will be used for coloring; they are the dyes chosen and used by Japanese kimono fabric making masters for a long time, so you would enjoy painting with them.

In this workshop you will learn how to draw and paint with Japanese brushes and rice glue resist. You will design and hand-make your own silk painting on a 20” x 20” sheet of silk fabric with multicolored dyes. Japanese yuzen dyeing is somewhat similar to water-color painting but, since it is a dyeing method, you can paint on fabrics, such as your silk blouse or pajamas. Some people remake old scarves or cushions by adding some new motifs. This method is also applicable on linen and cotton - and of course, you can wash and reuse those painted fabrics.

The three day workshop will be taught by a fabric artist, Yuko Yamamoto, at Providence Farm. The participation fee is $250 per person including the materials. Participants who will be silk painting for the first time are encouraged to buy a set of traditional tools for $105 (some rental tools are available for $30).

There will be a $35 hold back on cancellations in the last week before the events due to the specialty materials that need to be prepared for the workshop.

Please register and Eventbrite - 300 year old Silk Painting Workshop - Yuzen Dyingonline or at the Providence Farm office.
